I direct symbols in the illusory space of a pool party, a non-place simultaneously connoting inclusivity and exclusivity, while water evokes submersion and renewal. In this setting, the symbols allude to fictional, autobiographical and social experiences. The black humanoid figure, elusive, sly, yet seemingly all-knowing reacts against identity politics. An archetype, It is distilled from deities overseeing destiny—the likes of the Greek Moirai, the Vedic Rta, and the Dominican El Baca. The characters are a mash-up of looters, idiots, Don Quixote, on-lookers, sneaks, and hopefuls, etc. The surrealist placement of symbols results from a fusion of cultural frictions. The pictorial plane upholds and disrupts the wester perspectival space. Inspired by Ukiyo-e, or “pictures of the floating world,” this series was intended as a microcosm of contemporary personal and social phenomena.
